SERIOUSLY INSPIRING PEOPLE REVEAL THEIR BEST KEPT FASHION & BEAUTY RELATED FAMILY SECRETS
There's something about the dynamic between Sarah & Joanna Halpin that is very endearing. It's a bit hard to grasp, but it's always there - in the way they finish each other sentences, laugh at unspoken jokes, and reminisce about their mother's cooking skills. Apart from both being wildly successful models (Joanna just finished her first television campaign for L'Oréal!) and having completed a training in creative design, they're witty and down-to-earth, and an absolute delight to talk to; can you say the complete package? No surprise that we were thrilled to hear all about their best kept fashion and beauty secrets, including an inherited obsession with striped shirts and veeeery minimal make-up.
ON GROWING UP IN A SMALL TOWN
Joanna: We grew up in Cornwall, England, and now we're both based in London (we live about 30 minutes apart). I think it was kind of nice to grow up in a place that sheltered us from the fashion industry. Our childhood was very outdoors-y, far away from anything beauty or fashion related, and I think it has helped us a lot to stay grounded and have the right focus. We really don't every want to lose that.
Sarah: We've never really been girly girls, always preferring sneakers over heels, and we definitely lean towards a minimal style. That's just who we are.
ON COPYING YOUR MOM'S BEAUTY & FASHION ROUTINES
Joanna: Our mom never wore any make-up; she just washed her face, and that was literally her beauty routine. So neither of us wear much make-up either, unless we're going out. Also, she'd always stress the importance of hydrating yourself. True to her English roots, she's constantly drinking tea or water, and we totally adopted that, lugging around large bottles of water everywhere.
Sarah: Fashion-wise, she always adviced us to wear blue-and-white stripes. She always wears them herself. When we were about 3 or 4 and all we wanted to wear was pink, she put us in denim instead.
ON CREATING SOMETHING AS SISTERS
Joanna: I started modelling 3 years before Sarah did, as she was still studying pattern design at Leeds University at the time. So I guess I already established myself a little bit as a model before we became the '2 modelling sisters'. When we decided to start up our blog we really wanted it to be something personal, our little baby that we created and nourish.
Sarah: Although we really like the modelling-related content of the blog, we also see it as an outlet for our love of graphic design, so it's actually a platform for us to show that we have something to put out there. The fact that we're sisters will always be an important aspect of our career - people just seem to love the fact that we're sisters, in a 'blonde-and-a-brunette' kind of way. :)
ON LOOKS YOUR MOM SHOULD'VE NEVER LET YOU LEAVE THE HOUSE WITH
Joanna: I remember when I was about 14 I had this look that involved plucking my eyebrows very thin, with lots of purple eye shadow, and - to top it off (literally) - a super tight bun. I thought I looked really cool, but looking back, well, I didn't. :)
Sarah: I totally went the other way and spent most of my teens looking wannabe emo, with the heavy music, a big sweeping side fringe, lots of eyeliner and black nails. Not quite gothic but getting there, haha.
ON NOSTALGIC SCENTS
Sarah: My favorite scent is a classic, Chanel's Coco Mademoiselle. I've been wearing it since I was about 15, totally sucked in because of my girl crush on Keira Knightley.
Joanna: I used to wear that too, but when I ran out I started using Euphoria by Calvin Klein. My boyfriend bought it for me when I turned 17, and it reminds me of that sweet period.
ON EXCLUSIVELY EATING POTATO SMILEY FACES
Both: She's going to kill us for saying this, but our mom's literally the worst cook! We grew up eating potato smiley faces! We do, however, have to give her credit for always stimulating us to be active and outdoors, which we both still adore.
Sarah: I made our parents their very first smoothie just a little while ago, but mom thought it was too green to be any good. :)
Thanks so much for chatting with us, Sarah & Joanna! You guys are sister goals for sure!
