Patent leather: you either love it, or you hate it. If you belong to the latter category, now's the time to change your mind, because leather with a shiny finish is one this Fall's biggest trends. But hey, I get it: leather's most show-y version can easily come across as a little bit cheap & tacky - not the best qualities when it comes to fashion. Since I'm always in for something offbeat though, I'm fully on board with the trend, and in hopes of spreading the love: here are my 3 favourite tricks to pull off patent leather without looking tacky!
1 / SOPHISTICATED CUTS ONLY
If you want pieces to come across stylish & fashionable, a great finish & sophisticated cut are key. Opt for well made (genuine!) patent leather in a classic shade, such as a deep maroon red. As for the cut, if you're not too sure about the patent leather trend, go with an always sophisticated V-shaped version with a low heel - no person on the planet who will associate this with tackiness, ever (and once you're comfortable with it, don't hesitate 1 second to go a little or a lot crazy, of course).
2 / PAIR WITH STURDY FABRICS
Apart from appearing tacky, patent leather can also feel like a bit too much for daily wear. But the truth is that it's sooo easy to make it office appropriate, just by adding slightly heavy materials (and shy away from more shiny stuff, such as metallics or strass details). A sturdy pair of cropped denim or a wool cape with asymmetrical hem are just perfect, and will take your outfit from office to meeting to dinner with your besties with no effort at all!
3 / 100% CLASSY DEETS
To finish your look, steer the opinions on your patent leather pieces in the right way by adding super chic details: golden statement jewelry, a cute structured bucket bag, and matching maroon nails. That's taking your shine to a whole new level right there!
How do you feel about the patent leather trend? Will you be trying it out this Fall, or nah?
