When Marcio surprised me with a trip to Thailand to celebrate our 10-year anniversary, I have to say it made me a little emotional. TEN YEARS! That's a whole lotta love! I honestly cannot believe it's been this long; I still remember us meeting in Paris, and me picturing our future and being together forever, waaaay too early in our relationship. :) And now look at us today! Over the past years, we've shared so many wonderful things, connected through our mutual desire to travel and discover new parts of the world. I don't take our love for granted, and everyday I'm thankful to have found such a sweet, sexy, thoughtful, and considering partner in life. To celebrate this milestone in our relationship, we made up a little Q&A for us to answer individually (no peeking!), so here goes...
WHAT'S YOUR BEST TRICK FOR KEEPING THINGS EXCITING?
Sofie: It's really important for me to create as many amazing memories together as possible. In those 10 years, we've done so many memorable things, met countless inspiring people, have visited the most incredible places,... It's great to reminisce about all that, and to make new plans for the future.
Marcio: Since we work together and are always so busy with that, I think it's extra important for us to really take some time for ourselves, as a couple, and talk about personal things. And also: never stop flirting! :)
YOU'VE SHARED SO MANY AMAZING THINGS TOGETHER, FROM GOING ON ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME TRIPS TO BUYING A HOUSE TOGETHER. WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER THE MOST IMPORTANT MILESTONE IN YOUR RELATIONSHIP SO FAR?
Marcio: Buying our house together was such a meaningful step, since it symbolized so much for me. Making that decision to settle here in Belgium, far away from my Brazilian family, was definitely emotional, but it also made me very happy to commit to our relationship like that.
Sofie: For me, that was when Marcio joined Fashionata full-time a couple of years ago. Before that, we didn't share as much: I would go on trips, see the most amazing sunset and tell him about it over the phone, but that wasn't very satisfying. After we started working together, we would share all of these things, and it has made us so much stronger as a couple. In a way, that's when we really became a team - both personally and professionally.
WHAT'S THE MOST ANNOYING HABIT OF ONE ANOTHER?
Marcio: Mmmm, I think Sofie's super creative, but also a bit messy. I mean, her office can get so cluttered that it literally freaks me out. This girl has too many shoes, for real!
Sofie: He can be a bit too relaxed! :) I'm super impatient and want things to get done on the spot, so that can drive me crazy. He's also very easily distracted: when we're discussing things and something happens around us he'll focus on that for sure, and I really have to win back his attention.
AFTER 10 YEARS OF BEING TOGETHER, DID YOU RECENTLY DISCOVER SOMETHING NEW ABOUT EACH OTHER?
Sofie: Yes! We know each other inside out, but he still surprises me on a regular basis, with all the sweet things he does: an impromptu trip or dinner at my favourite restaurant. I love that about him, and that definitely also keeps things exciting!
Marcio: I've always known her as a very caring person, but when my mama got really sick a while ago, I was amazed with Sofie's support and dedication. She was there for me all day, everyday, putting our family first without any hesitation at all - that really meant the world to me.
WHAT'S THE ONE THING THAT YOU ADMIRE MOST ABOUT EACH OTHER?
Sofie: I love how carefree he is. I used to always obsess about what other people thought of me (which is not a great quality to have as a public figure!). Ever since we are together I actually don't stress about that anymore, and that's such a relief. I also love that Marcio's a family man: he'll always put his family first, no matter what happens. That gives me a really safe feeling, knowing that he'll do the same for me and our future kids.
Marcio: I admire her mentality of making things happen. When she wants something she just goes for it 100%; she'll get out of her comfort zone and do it.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE THINGS TO DO TOGETHER?
Marcio: Traveling! It's just the best thing ever to arrive somewhere new, for the first time in your life, and take in all the new fragrances, tastes, and sounds. It keeps things fresh and new. If there's one thing for sure, it's that we've never ever fallen into a boring routine - a common pitfall for couples that have been together for so long. And I really think traveling together is the key to that.
Sofie: I'm kind of obsessed with our sushi dates. :) We both love having sushi together, and then go to the movies: it's so sweet and simple, but I really love it.
A REALLY PERSONAL ONE: HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERED GETTING MARRIED? AND HOW ABOUT KIDS?
Sofie: Contrary to many girls, getting married has never been on my priority list. It means so much to us that we've been together for 10 years; whether or not this was made 'official' wasn't that important for us, I guess. If we would ever decide to get married (this is not a hint, just a 'you never know' :)), I'd like to keep it very small and private, maybe on a little beach in Brazil, relaxed and barefoot. I think that would be very 'us'. And yes, we certainly want kids, but we just found it important to first create lots of amazing memories together and live our lives to the fullest before settling down a bit. We still plan on traveling a lot with our kids, by the way, but at the same time we realize it's not going to be the same.
Marcio: I'd love to get married one day, but it's not a priority for us. And yes, kids, definitely also! :)
NAME A FEW THINGS THAT MAKE THE OTHER PERSON THE HAPPIEST (APART FROM FRIENDS, FAMILY, AND OF COURSE YOUR CAT BOBKE)
Sofie: Marcio's a bit of a tech nerd, so a new gadget, camera, iPhone, or drone will make him very happy. :) Brazilian treats! And music. When we first met, he and his roommates loved to play guitar all night long, while talking and eating bbq food right off the grill. Until this day, music is really something that can calm his nerves.
Marcio: Watch movies together on the sofa, with our cat Bobke. And going to the supermarket in foreign countries; she can get really excited about discovering new foods and beauty stuff abroad!
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE GIFTS FOR ONE ANOTHER?
Marcio: She already has a lot of stuff, so that's probably one of the main challenges for me. She's also kind of picky about what she likes. :) But I do like to get her something for the house, like a painting or a beautiful piece of furniture, that makes our house welcoming and really a reflection of who we are.
Sofie: He has a lot of things, so it's not very easy! But I always try to come up with personal gifts, such as framed pictures of one of our trips, so that it's a bit more meaningful.
WHAT'S THE NO. 1 THING YOU STILL WANT TO CROSS OFF YOUR BUCKET LIST TOGETHER?
Marcio: Traveling to India and China! We'd really like to do this before we have kids.
Sofie: We'd still love to go to India and China together. He'll probably say the same, since that's really something we've been talking about for so long.
MAIN PIECE OF ADVICE FOR FOREVER LOVERS?
Sofie: Keep in mind that no relationship is perfect; every couple has issues, but as long as you're committed to working it out together, you'll be fine. We also make sure to never go to bed angry, because that's kind of a vicious circle: then you don't sleep well and everything looks even worse in the morning. So I'd definitely say it's important to talk things through before you go to sleep.
Marcio: Keep surprising each other! And learn to live with each other's differences. Since we have a different cultural background this is a really big deal for us: to have an open mind and consider things from a different perspective once in a while.
