We might as well be honest about it: the Holidays are over and January, the Monday of months, is kicking in hard. And the only thing worse about January than the weather are those damn New Year's resolutions, tapping you on the shoulder wherever you go. First on the list: your new workout routine! So cliché but so true: there's no better time to start working on your fitness than a new year, because this Summer it's going down. And honestly, after yet another day spent indoors (looking at you, rain!), it can feel really good to get that booty going. But staying motivated is of course the trickiest part, and a huge part has to do with actually feeling (and looking!) good while exercising. So here's a personal January confession: despite the ongoing debate on the topic, I totally work out with makeup and so can you!
Truth be told, after having our little boy, it took me a pretty long time to get into a regular workout routine again. I've never been a huge fan of the gym, and prefer running outdoors or doing a little yoga session anytime - as to clear my head and work on my physique simultaneously. And though I know there are a lot of conflicting opinions about it, from day 1 I've consciously tried to find a way to incorporate my makeup into my workouts. It's honestly already such a challenge to include exercising into your daily routine, and since I do wear makeup on a regular basis, it just seemed much more realistic that way. Plus I'm a big believer of the fact that skincare and makeup have evolved immensely over the past decade (bye bye '90s cake-y foundation!), so with the right products (and my 4 fave tips ;)), it's totally possible! Here goes...
1 / GET YOUR BASIS RIGHT
Just as with your actual workout, it's important to get the basics right. Make sure to focus on a light base that combines skincare & camouflage (always my absolute favourite products!), such as a non comedogenic tinted moisturiser or CC cream that won't clog your pores. If you want to go all the way and apply eye makeup, a good primer that will keep things in place is of course essential. Finally, my absolute no. 1 product to include into my workout makeup is a good tinted lip balm. It adds some colour to your complexion and keeps your lips moisturised & hydrated while sweating and chugging your mandatory water. :)
2 / ANTICIPATE THE WET
Sweating is a wished for part of every great workout, so anticipating on that when choosing your workout makeup is a must! A good setting powder, that you apply by pressing it on top of your tinted basis, will absorb your sweat without looking cake-y (the same way it does on super hot days), so it's absolutely essential to include. I prefer a loose powder over a pressed one, because the texture always seems to be a bit lighter. If you want a little colour on the cheeks, a cream blush is perfect to add a healthy pre-workout flush; it has the ability to stay on a little longer than its powder counterparts (cause it's a bit more sticky), so that's a winner right there. Finally, it goes without saying that waterproof mascara will save you from leaving the gym without a (makeup conflicted) black eye.
3 / NO RUBBING
This one doesn't require any products, just common sense. :) If you want to avoid rubbing off your carefully applied makeup after sweating a bit, avoid rubbing and pat your face dry instead - much like you applied your loose powder. A ridiculously simple tip, but one that's super crucial!
4 / CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN & HYDRATE
And of course: after your workout-with-makeup it's all a matter of cleaning your skin well! For those of you who like to use a face wash with water, go right ahead, but even after a workout I like to rely on a good micellar water to take everything off (until my cotton pad doesn't show any more dirt). Make sure to hydrate your skin well, to make up for all the fluids you've shed and get that balance right on track.
What are your thoughts on working out with makeup? Do you do it as well, and what are your must-haves? Would so love to hear I'm not the only one out there! :)
