I always receive a lot of questions on where I eat, go out and shop in Antwerp, so I thought it would be a good idea to collect all these addresses and put them together in one blog post. Just for the record, I know there are much more nice hotspots in Antwerp but these are my favourite addresses, the ones that I visit more or less every week/ month. I hope you enjoy them and please let me know what are your favourites in Antwerp!
Oke, let’s start!
Drinks- For coffee, go to Barnini, Caffenation or Tinsel. Antwerp has a lot of good coffee bars, but those 3 I visit quite often ( as they are close to my home). They are also the best for cakes and other sweets!
Food- Oehlala!!! Antwerp has a lot of good restaurants! My hotspot for lunch is definitely Sofie’s Place and not only for the name :) No, their salmon tartar and lobster salad is just delicious! For the best sushi, you can go to Izumi and if you like fish, you should definitely try Fiskebar. If I feel like eating Italian food, I often go to ‘Le John’ for good pasta’s and tasty wines. For fine dining you should definitely pay a visit to The Jane, which is located in a beautiful old chapel. Not only the decoration is very impressive, also the food is mouth-watering. But make sure you make a reservation!
When you visit Antwerp, you can’t leave without spoiling yourself with the best chocolates: Pierre Marcolini is a must! The chocolates are just so so so good. Heaven on Earth!
Shops- My favourite flower store in Antwerp is without any doubt Baltimore Bloemen. Raf Simons is a good friend of the florist, Marc Colle, and they often work together. Remember that huge floral wall that Raf Simons created for his first Dior Couture show? Yep, “Baltimore’ is Raf’s ( and mine) secret weapon when it comes to flowers!
For shopping, head over to the best shopping districts such as De Wilde Zee, Schuttershofstraat and the Nationalestraat. You can find amazing stores such as the Dries Van Noten flagship store, Enes, Af Vandevorst, Delvaux, Copyright book store, Renaissance, Verso, Graanmarkt 13, The Recollection, Essentiel … They are all in a walking distance!
For vintage interior (and antiques) shopping, you can wander around in the very cosy Kloosterstraat. Here can also find Qualiteatime, an exclusive tea store with a wide variety on white (my favourite!), green and black teas.
For a little escape moment and some me-time, I love to go to the Lakstore. A fresh mani and pedi and I feel brand new!
How- Antwerp is fairly small, so you could do everything by walking ( or by city bike) but if the weather is bad or you have too many shopping bags :), it’s sometimes easier to take the car. I prefer to drive my small Twingo city car, like this I can park and move in the streets of Antwerp without any problem and drop my shopping bags or change my outfit for the night whenever I want. There is also a huge free parking spot on the south of Antwerp ( Vlaamse Kaai), so you can start your day in Antwerp from there.
To Sleep- I live in Antwerp so I don’t try a lot of hotels but I can advise you these ones: Hotel Julien ( they have an amazing spa and view over the old historical city + it’s the a hotspot for many celebrities : Kanye West, Sting and Mario Testino already stayed there ), De Witte Lelie ( for the best interior decoration and most beautiful rooms) and Room National ( it’s like having your own apartment in Antwerp).
To see- A little hidden treasure is the Hendrik Conscienceplein, a beautiful old square in the middle of the city. It’s my favourite place to have a cava and lunch during a hot summer day. The view your have on the Carolus Borromeuskerk ( church) is just priceless.
Another must visit is the MoMu, the fashion museum of Antwerp, which is part of the fashion academy ( where the Antwerp Six graduated). The MoMu presents two major exhibitions every year, showcasing pieces from the museums collection, as well as exquisite couture and historical pieces. You can’t be in Antwerp without visiting this museum!
If you’re a fan of classic old movies, than you’re gonna love Cinema Zuid! This Art House brings all the best of the film history. I check their programme almost every week, as I love to watch old French movies with actrices like Cathérine Deneuve and Brigitte Bardot.
The largest museum of Antwerp is the MAS, located on the trendy ‘eiland’ district. If you like architecture, art of history, then the MAS it’s definitely a must! It’s also a public building so you can go ( for free) to the top floor of the building and enjoy an amazing panoramic view of Antwerp and the harbour. On the 9th floor you find one of the best restaurants from Antwerp: ‘t Zilte ( who has received 2 Michelin stars). Delicious food in combination with a breath taking view!
Leopold de Waelplaats: a cozy square located in front of the Museum of Fine arts. You can find some designer flagship stores here and also a lot of nice bars and restaurants. In summer I love to sit down on the museum stairs and watch people play lawn bowling. It’s so peaceful!
If you cross the river and go to Linkeroever ( the left river bank), you will discover an amazing view all over the city of Antwerp. And it even has it’s own beach! Don’t expect palm trees and stuff but it’s a very nice and peaceful place.
I love to go there for the beautiful sunsets and to grab a bite at pop up restaurant Glow by Wout Bru. The South American grills are just perfection. Really worth the visit!
Enjoy Antwerp! :)
