Waking up with a view on sun drenched blue skies in Berlin… can’t think of a better way to start a city trip. Berlin was a whirlwind two days of exploring underground subcultures, alternative lifestyles and street art / graffiti scenes. There is just so much to see and discover! I’ve written a few of my personal recommendations below, if you are considering visiting Berlin one day ( which I can highly recommend!):
City experiences: walk the Berlin Wall. Oke, it’s a cliché but you can’t be in Berlin without visiting the wall ( by the Spree) at least once in your life. The East Side Gallery is all about art and painting, a great place to get inspired. Make sure you also visit Checkpoint Charlie, the famous east-west border control during the Cold War.
Scattered across the city you can find Photoautomaten, where you can take a selfie as a souvenir. You can find them on almost every street corner… so much fun!!! For a cozy stroll I can advise you Grunewald ( a super large forest area): take a picnic and, when it’s nice weather, your bathing suit for a dip the clean waters of Schlachtensee.
Food: If you’re a sushi addict like me, you can go to DuDu in Torstraße where they serve the most delicious sushi ever! Another tip is Transit , if you want to experience homemade Asian food. Everything comes served in small bowls: grilled squid, chopped chicken with spicy lime sauce, avocado dips,… Simple but delicious! Also a must is Neni Berlin, a rooftop restaurant with sweeping views of old Berlin ( and the zoo!). The delicious Middle Eastern food ( you should try the hummus trio!) is to die for.
Shopping: After you eat at Neni Berlin, you can go for a bit of shopping at the Bikini Mall down below. It’s such an unique place where you can relax and discover new labels and local fashion brands. I loved the pop-up stores and the creative vibe. If you like to hunt for bargains, you can pay a visit to Mauer Park, the mecca for market lovers. The flea market on Sundays is a treasure of clothes, food, furniture,…
Hotel: I spend my stay in Berlin at the Sofitel Gendarmenmarkt, located in the heart of city. The view from the balcony was just perfect: facing the Gendarmenmarkt and it’s Dome… Aaargh, it’s such a pleasure to wake up like this each morning! Not only waking up but also working on the blog with that view...it just can’t get any better than this. Oh, another little extra: right in the corner of the hotel you can find ‘The Corner’ ( hehe!), a multibrand store where you can find Alaïa, Balenciaga, Celine, Isabel Marant,… I could easily ‘disappear’ for a couple of moments when my boyfriend would take his shower, to do a bit of shopping, without him even realizing it! :) Haha, talking about a perfect location, right?!
Transport: We took the hop on/ hop off bus but to be honest, I think it’s more fun to discover the city by bikes. Berlin has great cycle lanes and you can easily get around with your bike.
