Ever since I was little I had some serious trouble with the question of what my favourite colour is. Baby pink! Electric blue! Maroon! Emerald green! There's just too much to choose from... So it always kind of comes as a surprise to me when people struggle with incorporating colour into their outfit. :) Especially during Winter, I'm very often asked about this, as this season is usually associated with dark shades and neutrals. Not in my closet though! I'm totally the one who's fighting with the wind to open her umbrella in a bright yellow coat, metallic bag in one hand, steaming hot coffee-to-go in the other. While you might want to skip this last scenario, I'm more than happy to give you my go-to tips for getting that perfect poppy Winter look:
1 / START WITH NEUTRALS
If you're hesitant about wearing super colourful pieces, start by laying out your basics in neutral colours. If you're going for an overall bright look, avoid dark shades such as black and brown, opting instead for white and cream coloured neutrals or light denim. Combine with a bright top layer in the colour of your choice (I went with this cosy blue coat).
2 / CHEAT WITH METALLICS
3 cheers for the ongoing metallics trend, because these babies have the ability to brighten up your outfit without adding another (predominant) colour. Added bonus: since silver and gold pieces match with every colour on the planet, they'll blend in easily with the rest of your outfit.
3 / WHEN IN DOUBT: COLOURFUL ACCESSORIES
Accessories: the colourful girl's rescue pieces! There's nothing like a multi-coloured bag or statement earrings to add some colour to your outfit. I'm a big fan of oversized colourful earrings, while on the other hand I like to keep my poppy bags on the smaller side. But the most important thing here is: do whatever you like best, because accessories are there to play with and to add a personal touch.
Anything to add? What are your favourite ways to add a bit of colour during these dark months? Here's to a colourful rest of the Winter! :)
